The plans for this flagship project are the culmination of 3 years of Master-planning and design under the stewardship of renowned UK Urban Designers, Metropolitan Workshop. A Planning Application for Phase 1 has been lodged with South Dublin County council and construction is programmed to commence in late Spring 2008.

The project site adjoins the new railway station and a new station concourse building will link the railway station with the main Civic Square within the town centre. A park & ride facility, a public transportation hub and public cycle parking will deliver unparalleled accessibility and connectivity to the city and surrounding areas. Adamstown Central is a sophisticated urban development and as the centre piece of Adamstown it will deliver advanced civic facilities for the emerging and future populations. Included in the plans are:

  • Over 40 shops including 2 major stores one of which will be a large supermarket
  • Bars, Cafés and restaurants
  • Offices
  • Place of Worship
  • State of the art Medical Centre incorporating host of medical services
  • Crèche
  • Civic Building incorporating a new Public Library, Community Centre and Youth Café
  • Multiplex cinema

These new facilities are positioned in close proximity to one another providing maximum convenience in a bustling environment. Adamstown Central will also have its own residential quarters nestled above the streets, where 600 new apartments are also planned as part of Phase 1, adding further vitality to the town. The process of designing the town centre started back in 2005 when Castlethorn Construction selected Metropolitan Workshop from an international shortlist of 5 practices to undertake the commission as urban designers for Adamstown District Centre. Once the urban vision for the District Centre was developed by Metropolitan Workshop, Castlethorn appointed a further 6 award winning Irish architectural practices in 2006 to design the buildings and quarters of the District Centre, that will combine to create a place of unparalleled distinction in Europe.

Developing a new urban environment that captures all of the richness and quality that town and city quarters develop over decades and centuries is no easy task. The design of Adamstown Central began with an urban framework plan within which a team of architects, landscape architects, lighting designers, engineers and design professionals have collaborated to develop a coordinated place where the whole is greater that the sum of the parts. Influenced by the intimate street patterns and public spaces of French Bastides (12th century settlements) and with a central core area similar to the proportions of Piazza Navona in Rome, the district centre draws its influences from across Europe.

Commenting on the master-plan, Neil Deely partner in charge at Metropolitan Workshop says “The design comprises a network of new public squares and numerous, intimately planned streets and side-streets. The new heart for Adamstown will provide a high quality contemporary built environment that will, once visited, live long in the memory. The district centre will be the heart-beat of Adamstown and an instantly recognisable place. The close proximity and adjacencies of leisure, civic, health and learning amenities are seldom found in existing town centres. These amenities and the new residential quarters have been intricately composed and interwoven toprovide a living environment to rival that of any town centre in Europe.
